G-Side - Chapter 1

G-Side is what would have happened if Dr Dre had put all his energy and music behind Tha Dogg Pound instead of himself and Snoop. Im not randomly dropping 90’s gangta boogie second tier acts for cool points, Dat Nigga Daz and Kurrupt were both talented as fuck and unfortunately will forever be known just as Snoop’s buddies or his hype men on tour. But if there was only merely a Calvin Brodis and The Chronic Doctor discovered Daz instead, but it was fast forwarded to 2000’s, G-Side with Tha Block Beattaz is what it would sound like.
“They” say gone are the days when you can simply listen and enjoy an artists growth, maturation and development not only as musicians, but as humans within society. In this new age of instant e-everything with disposable heroes and music, finding new stuff that has the honest potential of good things to come is rare as an Islamic Nascar fan. There will never be another Nas or Outkast for this generation to grow up with like I did, these younin’s dont have a chance with a goddam anorexic muppet covered in jail house tattoos like Wiz Khalifa leading the way for these planksters. The gimmick/persona/fantasy has become more important than the actual music being produced. This isnt meant to come off as a nostalgia back in my day type of rant about these new hack faggots calling themselves rappers in girl’s jeans. Its just that its become my frame of mind most days while surfing the endless sea of internet music blogs that I dont care much anymore, cuz the music itself barely cares. Every new shit is the greatest thing to come up and its going to change the music world or some other internet hipster hyperbole. Then next week comes and his homeboy has the new hot shit everyone is masturbating to, so Young Lil Queerbait is the hot new soundmaker. Everybody is trying to hit home runs, learning the art of music is becoming obsolete.
So when I thankfully came across the Slow Motion Soundz camp via the dopely named Paper Route Gangstaz music, it was a welcome and refreshing trip back in time when hip hop was dominated by talented crews, clicks and indie label posses that dressed similar and shit. The Slow Motion Soundz camp out of Alabama is like an organic callback to the days of the Wu Tang and their infinite affiliates. Whatever artist draws you in to the Slow Motion Soundz/Alabama scene, if you dig one act, you will likely enjoy nearly any and everyone else with even the smallest affiliation to the brand. As I typed earlier in the paragraph, the PRGz are who drew me in and Jackie Chain (the Redman to the click) kept me digging for more, Jhi Ali renewed my latent interest and about a year ago I came across the genius combination of ST 2 Lettaz and Yung Clova collectively know as G-Side, and praise to Allah my musical landscape and faith has been renewed. I was thankfully shown wrong about never finding a group to grow with, so if I was hipper and wiser in 2007 I could have done all the things with G-Side that I longed to once again be able to do with my rap artists. I could have witnessed on wax the growth of 2 young males from the ghettos of the South. A journey from kids running on the street to men who travel the world, make babies and pay taxes, all laid out upon a gorgeous tapestry of spaceship music thanks to the BlockBeataz along with the rest of the SMSz production family.
These dude are normal dudes that have been blessed with the gift of rap-stardom, just “ghetto niggas with nice flows”. However, they realize how lucky they are and appreciate it, putting in actual work and staying on their grind like so many claim but seldom actually do. Its their own label, they book their own shows and every bit of success can be attributed to their hard work and hustle, rather than who they know or blow.
The easy comparison would be to Outkast, as both are proudly Southern duos with the backing of a unique sonic landscape provided by a camp of similar yet different producers. A more astute and correct one if one must be made would be to 8Ball & MJG, for they have a closer spacey sonic aesthetic to G-Side than the ATLiens. There is also an obvious UGK influence throughout their catalog of work, but you can’t claim Southern without having some of their influence.
